Two Online CE Courses Available through the UMKC School of Dentistry…Complete the Coursework from the Comfort of Your Own Home!

Spring Semester: “Extended Care Permit III – Online and Lab Course” (18 CEUs)

This course was specifically designed to fulfill the Kansas State Dental Board requirement to for dental hygienists who apply for the ECP III Dental Hygiene Permit. Dental Hygienists with the ECP III certificate can practice under the sponsorship of a dentist in a variety of public health settings including, schools and long term care facilities in Kan-sas.
The course material will prepare the student to: (1) Describe the requirements of ECP III legislation; (2) Assess for recognition and subsequent referral for further dental care; (3) Remove decayed tooth structure using hand instru-ments; (4) Place various types of temporary restoration; (5) Adjust dentures to relieve sore spots; (6) Place tempo-rary soft re-liners on dentures; (7) Smooth rough tooth surfaces using a slow speed hand piece; (8) Extract primary teeth with Class IV mobility; (9) Manage dental emergencies; and (10) Understand various pharmacological agents such as antibiotics and antifungals.

Fall Semester: “Practicing in the Dental Hygiene Public Health Safety Net” – (30 CEUs)

This online course is designed to give the practicing dental hygienist a core understanding of how to enter and work in the dental hygiene safety net. The course will also increase the participant’s knowledge in the area of public health dentistry, including: health promotion, disease prevention, current legislation, evidenced-based treatment, school-based and portable dentistry, coalitions, treating geriatric and disabled populations, as well as how to write and secure grant monies. The course will give participants the background information needed to apply for the ECP I and II.
The Kansas State Dental Board requires an educational component for the ECP II certification.
